This Week's Winning Story

A Purposeful Life
By Dr Carol Ann Malizia

I have been a practising chiropractor for nearly 20 years.

One of the greatest moments of heart that I have ever experienced was from a wonderfully dedicated woman, her name was Annie. She had raised two beautiful happy, healthy children that I had the privilege of seeing grow up and who were actively involved in sports and arts in high school.

I can recall this particular experience one day, which was a busy afternoon, reception was filled and we were moving and grooving in the office. I walked into the room and I could sense there was a change in Annie’s energy. She said please adjust Jessica and Jason and me last as I need you to sit down so I can tell you something.

So I adjusted the children and then adjusted Annie and she proceeded to express to me he gratitude for having brought the children in for chiropractic care because she knew if their bodies had less stress than perhaps they would go through their experience they were due to endure with a little more strength. They were about to go to identify their father’s body which had been damaged due to a terrible boating accident.

And in that moment I recognised that in the pain and chaos of loss they stopped to do something that really would spark something later especially in Jason’s life, that I never had an understanding of until many years later.

Many years later, I was speaking at a Parker Seminar and at the end of the talk there must have been 300 Chiropractic Assistants present.  At the back of the room, there was this terribly handsome, young, strapping gentlemen waiting in the doorway as I went out. And as I got closer I recognised the eyes. All of a sudden a voice came, Dr Carol Ann, don’t you recognise me, it was Jason. I couldn’t believe it was him.

But, what was the most incredible piece was the gratitude he expressed to me for how much he loved the love I had given his family.  That was the reason that he became a Doctor of Chiropractic and now had the opportunity to affect hundreds of lives, the same way I was given that opportunity on that day when he had to identify his father’s body.

So the true miracle, was the fact that even in the face of adversity sometimes the caring loving touch of a hand that changes the nervous system that motivates him to make a commitment to his purpose becomes the most incredible fruition of a beautiful purposeful life.
