Love Thy Neighbour

From every tragedy can come a blessing !
You never know what coming close to death feels like, until you are there. As a teenager, as a present for Christmas, my parents gave my brother and I a ticket to go and visit relatives from home.
We went to our home town in Colombia and stayed with our aunt. My uncle was a very busy man and was away on a business trip.
On the first night we all went to bed around 10pm. At 1am in the morning, I was woken up by a robber repeatedly hitting me on the head with his gun. About 10 robbers had come into the house while we were sleeping. They had tied up the maid on the first floor and put her inside a closet. She was unconscious.
I was sleeping by myself in one of the guest bedrooms and they told me that everyone else was tied up and that they were going to tie me up as well. They took my socks off and put them in my mouth. They kept hitting my head and asking where is the safe? |

It did not matter how many times I said that I did not know, they did not care. They did not believe me and kept hitting my head with their guns. They told me that if I did not tell them, they would go into the other room and kill my brother.
I had no idea if there was a safe or not, so I could not tell them anything about it. They left my room and came back minutes later with blood all over their hands and said they had killed my brother.
I kept crying and telling them through the sock in my mouth, that I did not know where the safe was. Luckily, the neighbour noticed that there was a strange car parked outside and called the police. The robbers heard the neighbour trying to come in the house and they left before the police got there.
The neighbour called the ambulance when they found us. My brother was not dead but he required 22 stitches in his head.
My aunt and her children were also alive but very shaken up. That day I realized that no matter how much you can plan things in your life, sometimes there are things that come from nowhere that shake up your life. |
The key is to not let those circumstances dictate what you become, but to rise above them and see the lesson in all that happens. The victim mentally is what can make people in these cases become paralysed with who they are and then become fearful about what else might happen.
The key is not to shy away from difficult experiences, but to embrace them. You will become a wiser and stronger person for it.
Expect a miracle and it will happen!
