You Don't Bring Me Flowers

In early 2006 we moved from 10 acres on top of a mountain in a very beautiful rural area to our new home/office in a beach house across the border, in the next State.

The day after our move our two Personal Assistants came to the office in their own time on the Saturday to make sure they were settled into the new space, ready for a busy upcoming week.

Late on the Saturday afternoon my wife Judy and I found a great florist in a mall only fifteen minutes from our new office. We purchased two massive and delightful sheaths of flowers as thank yous for the extra effort our amazing personal assistants had put in.

As we were unlocking our car to leave the mall parking lot, a spritely woman in her mid eighties alighted from her car next to us.

Immediately her eyes became transfixed on these absolutely outstanding bunches of flowers. She said, Oh, they are the most beautiful flowers I have ever, ever seen. There are obviously two very fortunate ladies who will be receiving those flowers. My wife Judy and I replied together, Absolutely!

The dear woman, still overawed by the beauty of the flowers then said, I wish that sometime in my life that I could receive a sheath of flowers like those.

The only time most women ever receive flowers like these, is either when they marry, or at their funeral when they are no longer around to enjoy them. Judy and I looked at each other, smiled and then said to this sweet woman, We would like for to have one of these awesome bunches of flowers as a gift from us to you because you are so wonderful. I also gave her an Expect a Miracle card.

Her reaction was Oh, no I didn't mean that, I didn't want you to give me one of the sheaths of flowers. They would be so expensive, I cannot accept them.

Once we had this elderly widow agree that she really did deserve the flowers, and her emotions and tears had settled, we drove off in different directions.

Several weeks later, Judy was doing our grocery shopping in a supermarket at the same Mall when she saw a short woman struggling to reach some coffee on a high shelf. Judy said Can I help you? The answer was, Yes, please! Immediately the woman answered and turned around, they both recognized each other and had big hugs.

This woman then related to Judy that it truly was a miracle come true for her that she had received the flowers several weeks before. She said the flowers lasted for three weeks and had given her a totally different perspective about strangers, and the Expect a Miracle card now had added so much to her attitude about life, even at 86 years old.

The only sorry note that the woman shared with Judy was that only one resident in the aged care facility that she lived in believed the story of the gift of the flowers and the Expect a Miracle card. Virtually all the residents could not believe that someone could receive such a gift from strangers.

We loved the experience. We were gifted.
