Nature Had Made The Correction

When I was working in downtown Brisbane, a young baby was brought to the clinic by the mother and grandmother. The mother was a single woman and had no support person with her at the birthing. The birth was a long and difficult one. Both vacuum extractor and forceps had been used. The mother said that about 10 people had a pull of the forceps to see how hard one should pull. The baby boy had a huge bruise on his head from the vacuum extractor and his skull was deformed. The left frontal bone was flat as if he had been lying face down on a plank. All in all the poor little man was decidedly ugly. He was also listless and cried a lot.

Adjusting the baby's neck was quite straight forward but the head resisted all efforts to be moulded to the right and proper shape. After about 6 visits, it finally dawned on me, that skulls had been the same shape for some millions of years and that baby's body knew what his head should be, so something was stopping the head returning to normal. So I abandoned trying to make the head the right' shape. I eased the sutures of the skull apart. Next visit his head was the normal shape. The grand mother said, By the next morning his head was normal.

Many years later whilst doing a locum, I cared for the grandmother. She told me that her grandson had a normal life and was a carpenter by trade. He had a wife and family.

Nature had made the correction and I had merely assisted.
