A Nutty Story

In my days at Physical Education College I was playing Rugby Union football. I had finished playing a game late one Saturday afternoon and I was heading out to a party.

I was driving past Calam Park Mental Hospital in Sydney, it was just after 5.30pm in the afternoon and the sun was going down when suddenly I felt a flat tyre. I was very unhappy about this I and pulled over and took out the spare tyre. I found the wheel nut wrench, took the 5 nuts off and put them inside the hubcap to make sure that I didn't lose them. As I was taking the flat tyre off it slipped, hit the edge of the hubcap and the hubcap flipped the nuts out. As I was right next to a stormwater drain with a big grate across it all the nuts went bop, bop, down in the stormwater drain. So I had lost the nuts, they were gone forever, and I was mad.

Where on a Saturday evening in the 60s would you find someone to come out and bring you wheel nuts? This was an impossible task, I was cursing and not a happy chappy at all, when suddenly a voice came from behind me on the other side of the big wire fence and said, Ah mate, I know how to fix that. I turned around and said in return, What would you know about this? I was very cross. He said Well, I'll tell you what mate, you go round and you take one of those nuts from each of the three good wheels and that will give you three nuts mate. So instead of having five nuts you will have 3 nuts on that wheel, and if you put them in the shape of a triangle that will hold that wheel on perfectly. The other ones have got four nuts instead of five and they will be okay too, and that'll be good until tomorrow when you can go and get some more wheel nuts to put on.

As much as I didn't like saying it, I said, mate, that's brilliant, fantastic, and I'm really sorry I just said some nasty words to you, I take all those back mate, you're a star, you're a brilliant man, you're a miracle man.

He said, You know what mate, when they put us in here we are all crazy and we all know that mate, but there's one thing, we are definitely not stupid.

So that Expect a Miracle story has stood fast in my mind ever since that day and I know that if you want to achieve things it may help to be somewhat crazy. I've got to be out there on the edge, I've got to think differently, I've got to think laterally outside the box. Just because you're crazy, it definitely doesn't mean you're stupid. Great lesson.
