My Miracle Meals

I was living in Austria in the small village of Tirol. It was my intention to fly home to Australia with my ex fiancé in October, but changed my mind when I was offered a job to start in mid-December.

I went to Amsterdam to tell my ex that I wasn’t going home with him, however, on the train trip back to Austria I was robbed while I was sleeping. They took my engagement ring along with my camera and a few smaller items. Luckily I had insurance so filed a police report and an insurance claim.

I had ten weeks to wait before beginning my new job so I decided to pay my rent three months in advance so at least I had somewhere to live. My family had sent me a care package containing a 1kilo tin of Vegemite and a few other items. But after a month I found I only had about the equivalent of  $50 to last me until I started work.

I was still waiting for my insurance claim to be paid but had been told to look for it towards the end of December. I still had plenty of Vegemite so I could live on Vegemite rolls with some luck.

My friend was the daughter of the people I would be working for. As it was between seasons the village was quiet so we would meet each day for a coffee or a glass of wine and play cards to fill in the time. I hadn’t told her how close to the wind I was travelling financially. Anyway after a week I still met with her but didn’t order anything but just enjoyed the company. A couple of days of not ordering anything my friend started to question me about my state of affairs. Swearing her to secrecy I told my money was all but gone. I was still waiting for the insurance claim which should come just after I started work.

Unknown to me she had already guessed my situation and had spoken to hear father who invited us down to watch an English language program on TV. At the end of the program he asked us to stay for dinner. This happened every night for 5 days. I started to wonder that maybe they knew I had very little money left.

I had started asking for a miracle several weeks before realising that I may not make it financially until I started worked. I thought my miracle had arrived with the kindness of the family giving me a meal each night.

But the real miracle arrived in the form of a cheque from the insurance company for about $1,500. It arrived four weeks before it was due and two weeks before I started work. My miracle saved me from the embarrassment of telling my boss how penniless I had become and I was able to take them for a meal to thank them for their hospitality.

My friend ended up telling me that they had figured out how cash strapped I was before I told her, so she was able to keep the secret. My boss never mentioned anything and became a very good friend till this day.
