Miracles DO Happen!

I have known Dr John Hinwood for over 21 years now. Gosh, I cannot believe it! Yes – it was definitely January 1991. John employed me all those years ago to join Australian Spinal Research Foundation when he was President of the Foundation. Many years have passed and I have had two rounds of employment at the Foundation (in between having my family). John is amazing in that he has truly been a great friend to me (along with his wife Judy) during our association. He has taught me so much over the years, given his guidance to me and told me to go for it when I have doubted myself.

He is so entertaining when he speaks, he can laugh at himself when things don’t go according to plan, will talk to anyone in his travels around the world – coming into contact with strangers in ‘bad moods’ and turning it around with handing out his Expect A Miracle cards and having them convert into a ‘good mood’.

Who would have thought of an Expect A Miracle School? John Hinwood did! I attended his school and even after listening to him speak dozens of times over the last two decades, he still mesmerises with new stories from his travels that I hadn’t heard about.

John has always had faith and belief in people and in me. I recently decided that it was time to get out of my comfort zone and aim higher in my career. I had self-doubt and said to myself “am I good enough?” and “no – I can’t do that – I am not qualified”. But in the back of my mind I thought about everything I have learned over the last 20 years and the positive people I had associated myself such as John Hinwood and decided to go for it!

Now I will tell you a little story about miracles – and I know I experienced one in April this year. My husband has a heart condition (a wretched virus attacked his heart in 2009) and I know we needed more income into my family in case he is not able to work into the future. Yes – my Mother Bear survival hat was definitely on! My very reliable car was on its last legs and not so reliable any more – she was looking very much worse for wear and we were in desperate need for a new one. But we kept putting off buying a new one because of finances. I am from Dutch heritage so the tulip is very significant in my Dutch family (even my office had a picture of a field of tulips) and I can still see the lovely picture of my dear Mother (who has since passed away) standing in a field of tulips on her last trip back to Holland.

I applied for a senior management job (still in the not-for-profit sector) and got it. I beat the 50 or so candidates who applied with various academic degrees who, on paper, were more qualified that I. The new position comes with substantially more income (yes – we needed that), a company vehicle (and yes, we needed that too), and wait for it – the logo of the new company is the TULIP!

I looked up into the heavens when I was told I was successful in the new job and thanked my parents for looking after me. Do you think I believe in miracles – you betcha!!

John continues to be my mentor and is a huge support to me in my new role. He now hands out Expect A Miracle cards to my new staff.
Thanks for everything John. Miracles DO happen!
