My Huge Miracle

I will always remember a “huge miracle” relating to my late David who at the time was suffering from acute onset dementia which saw a rapid breakdown in his cognitive abilities. It was not long after a June Long Weekend visit you and Judy made to stay with us in 2009.

In the weeks that followed David became more and more distressed. I was becoming quite fearful that he was becoming so agitated that my safety was at risk. His lovely doctor who was a specialist geriatrician working from Coffs Harbour Hospital was to be on holidays overseas for a large part of that year with only a few short stints working in Coffs. One Friday, David was particularly aggressive, so much so that I phoned this doctor, knowing that he was back in Coffs for ten days only before his next trip. He directed me to call an ambulance immediately so David could be taken to hospital. To make a long story short... because this doctor was qualified and able to make decisions re hospital admissions and nursing home placements and because I knew him well and he knew David’s case so well he was able to ensure David stayed in hospital way longer than would have been usual and then from hospital David went straight to the nursing home of our choice.

All this only happened because “Dr John” was between overseas strips – a 10 day window of opportunity. No other doctor could have engineered this , at a time when I knew I could have no longer coped with the present situation caring for David at home. Dr John’s help and care in this very difficult situation was a miracle for David and myself.
