How Did You Find Me?

In the late 1970s I started chiropractic practice in Australia in a small rural community north of Sydney. I came across a wonderful question to ask all my new patients who had not come to see me by personal referral from a family member, friend or other health professional.

In those days most practices were made up of 70% new patients who were referred and 30% who found their way to the practice by seeing your sign or Yellow page listing in the phone directory. Most of this 30% group came from the phone book.

At the annual National Chiropractic Conference that year I met a wonderful chiropractor from Perth, Western Australia by the name of Dr Michael McKibbin. We happened to sit beside each other at  lunch and he shared with me his ‘ice breaker’ that he used when greeting patients for the first time.

His opening question “Did you find me under C for Chiropractic or M for Miracle?”

He said it always brought a laugh, or at least a chuckle, from the new patient and he was off to a great start with this new person.

I thought this was excellent and immediately adopted the idea into my daily practice routine. Thirty three years on and I still use it.

Almost every person I’ve asked this of have said, “C for Chiropractor, but M for Miracle  would be so much better.” Then I point to the Expect A Miracle sign on the wall in my consulting room and they would laugh and say, “oh,yeh”

In 1987 I started handing out an Expect A Miracle card to every new patient to give them an attitude boost, so we could move forward together in a positive way on their healing path.
